Although not as famous as petroleum, alcohol has been used as a fuel in the past a lot. Methanol, ethanol and other alcohols are very good fuels, whose octane rating is very high. Alcohol fuels‘ sources are biological and that’s why they are often called bioalcohols.
Bioalcohols are still in research stage and aren’t fully developed yet.
The most „famous“ bioalcohols are methanol, ethanol and buthanol. Methanol and ethanol are derived from fossil fuels or biomass. Propanol and buthanol are less toxic than methanol.
The largest producers of bioalchol (alcohol fuel) is Brazil. They are producing it from sugarcane. Many countries signed contracts with Brazil in order to buy bioalcohol from them. Other countries whose bioalcohol production is rising all the time are China, Russia and USA.
