A biofuel plant as the name suggests is the place where a certain type of biofuel is produced. Many countries have started their own biofuel plant establishments to deal with the current fuel crisis in the world.
Most of the biofuel plant establishments around the world produce the first generation biofuels. Two of the most popular biofuel plant types are the ones that produce ethanol and biodiesel.
The Ethanol Plant
One of the prominent biofuels plant types is the one that produces ethanol. It is also known as an ethyl alcohol plant or a grain alcohol plant.
The plant produces ethanol by using the fermentation of various sugars that has been derived from a variety of plant materials. In countries like United States, the most common form of feedstock used in an ethanol plant is corn.
The ethanol produced by a biofuel plant has an energy content of a total of 84,000 British thermal units (Btu) per gallon. It is much more than the 123,900 Btu produced by a gallon of unleaded gasoline.
The plant has to make sure that the ethanol produced in it is able to meet the ASTM standard D4806-98. Also it has to be diluted with a denaturant like the natural, gasoline. This makes it unfit for human consumption and makes it suitable to be used strictly as a fuel.
The Biodiesel plant
The biodiesel plant produces a type of biofuel which resembles diesel. It is produced by simply mixing the fats, greases and the various forms of vegetable oils with a form of alcohol like ethanol and methanol along with a catalyst.
During the production process in the plant the free fatty acids and glycerin are removed from the biofuel. It makes it suitable enough to be used in almost every type of diesel engine. There is no need to modify the engine or the fuel system, to use the biofuel in this form.
The biodiesel produced in a biofuel plant has much better lubrication characteristics in comparison to the diesel that is derived from petroleum. Also the diesel produced in a biofuel plant has absolutely no sulfur.
The biodiesel produced in a biofuel plant can easily be used in all types of vehicles with a diesel engine. It doe not cause any problems to the engine. The biodiesel can easily be accumulated and moved. The fuel burns rather efficiently and can be used much easily than any other form of alternative fuel.
The biodiesel produced in a biofuel plant has a low production cost, hence is much cheaper than ordinary diesel for the end consumes. Also it is a renewable power source that means the world will not run out of it in near future. The biodiesel produced in a biofuel plant has a little more than 118,000 Btu per gallon in comparison to the ordinary diesel that has a 129,000 Btu per gallon. Before marketing this diesel, the plant has to make sure that it meets the ASTM standard D6751.
