Energy from Chickens

New developments on the biofuel front are looking at utilizing chicken waste from the processing of live birds for food to be used as fuel. The resulting chicken mulch post meat extraction totals roughly 11 billion pounds each year and contains a combination of feathers, bones and various internal organs and is currently primarily used for animal feed, though two new approaches are being looked at in terms of energy usage: biodiesel and carbon fiber hydrogen storage.

Since the chicken mulch that is left over after processing contains roughly 12% fat researchers have determined that by applying moderate heat to raw material they can extract a large portion of this excess fatty material for biofuel usage. Through proper handling this could yield roughly 150 million gallons worth of fuel each year in the US alone with a grand total of nearly 600 million gallons worldwide – all while leaving the remaining material behind in a healthier state to still be used for animal feed or other purposes.

Additional research into the mulch has determined that by super-heating the mulch in a vacuum-like state to between 350 and 500 degrees centigrade carbon nanotubes are formed within the primary shaft of the leftover chicken feathers, potentially providing an abundant storage option for energy devices such as hydrogen fuel cells that currently rely upon metallic artificially created nanotube matrices and could benefit highly from this lighter, natural pure carbon-based alternative. Again, since this process safely allows for the formation and extraction of the carbon nanotubes from the central feather shafts remaining in the mulch the rest of the product can still be processed back into livestock feed for full utilization and virtually no waste. In fact, because both extraction processes remove many of the undesired elements left over in the chicken mulch the feed is actually higher grade than seen normally, meaning a win-win scenario all around for all those involved in the process.
