FedEx has recently announced that in order to follow through on its plans to become more and more ecologically friendly it will be the first parcel carrier to deliver packages using a fleet of all-electric delivery trucks. The first four all-electric trucks to join the expansive FedEx fleet, following in the footsteps of the 1,800 hybrid FedEx vehicles currently on the road worldwide, are looking at being seen on the streets of Los Angeles by June of this year.
FedEx has regularly been a leader in many aspects relating to alternative energy development and usage for the past few years, striving to regularly improve their vehicles’ performance while at the same time reducing their overall emissions. As for some of their other personal goals for the coming years in addition to the all-electric fleet shift they are aiming at reducing emissions by up to 20 percent for all of their aircraft in their service as well as improve all vehicle efficiency by the same amount by 2020. FedEx is also looking at various ways to fully utilize on-site renewable energy production while at the same time capitalize on as many opportunities as possible for green energy credits that are being granted to pro-active businesses engaged in ecological protection.
John Formisano, FedEx Express’ Vice President for Global Vehicles, has stated that the move to go electric with their fleet rather than simply sticking with the current hybrid design is to keep in line with the company’s tradition to bring about innovation to the parcel delivery industry and help to provide customers the best service possible at all times, both in terms of delivery as well as minimizing their impact upon the environment as a whole. They hope to continue to trend into the future as well and adopt new technologies as they come about to continuously bring about positive improvements to both themselves and their consumers.
