Madagascar is biofuels heaven

South Korean company called Daewoo Logistics signed a contract which means that they took a one hudred years lease on 3.2 million acres of land (that’s half the size of Belgium) to grow maize and biofuels. This deal is a sign that far-eastern countries are somehow afraid of what the future might bring and this way they are insuring themselves.

Many Asian companies have signed similar deals in various African countries over the past few years. “The Madagascar deal”, how it’s called, is the biggest deal so far, both financially and in size of land.

Their final plan is to be able to produce 10 metric tons of maize per hectare, but they’ll have to work very hard to achieve that.
