Top energy stories of the week

Renewable energy had a very good week. Winds were blowing, wheels were spinning & grades were flowing in the case of all renewable sources of energy. At the beginning of the week, an announcement was made that wind power has increased by 31% in the year 2009. Even though this growth was started by the EU, U.S. & China, it wasn’t limimted to the giants of the industry. Chile, Morocco & Turkey all increased capacity by 30% at least. The transport sector has hot news in the form of a hybrid announcement from Ferrari as well as electric bikes showed that this sector is continuing to expand and is now worth $11 billion. There were other renewable sectors too which had good news and this is what this article is for. You do not have to miss anything. Here we go:

1. Fifty Five countries pledge to reduce greenhouse gas – The climate conference in Copenhagen was termed as a failure by many people. But, this hasn’t stopped many of the UN member states from meeting their commitments made in the Copenhagen Accord & submitted their national greenhouse gas reduction targets. There is hope for a deal to cut the remaining emissions as well.

2. Ted Turner & Southern Company announced an alliance for ventures in renewable energy – Ted Turner & Southern Company joined forces hoping to hop on to the renewable energy band wagon. Their first focus is to develop solar photovoltaic power in the southwest region of America.

3. Ferrari to unveil a hybrid model – The Geneva Auto Show in March is where Ferrari are going to be unveiling their first attempt at hybrid technology. Great fuel economy, power and thought are part of this car. It is a lithium powered 599 GTB Fiorano. This car can do zero to sixty five in lesser than four seconds but can give you more than double the mileage that a normal Ferrari would give.

4. Wind power has risen by 31% through the world in the year of 2009 – 37.5 GW worth of new capacity has been added in 2009. The global & wind industry increased their net worth by around $63 billion. One fact, which is not surprising either is that China has installed the maximum wind capacity in the world.

5. Hybrid bulldozer by Caterpillar – Caterpillars 1st ever hybrid bulldozer, Cat D7E is the first of its kind. This is more powerful than normal bulldozers and even 10-30% moer efficient.
