A new approach to the alternative fuels has emerged in the recent times. People these days are trying to use the cars powered by vegetable oils. These cars are meant to be more environment friendly than the other vehicles.
The cars can be powered by simple vegetable oils with the help of a simple engine conversion. There are different types of conversions with different approaches towards using the vegetable oils.
- A popular conversion is the one that lets the owners of the cars use the vegetable oils or the biofuels directly. They just have to put the fuel in and start their journey.
- Another popular conversion type is the one that requires the car owners to mix the vegetable fuel with a fuel like kerosene or diesel. This mixture is very efficient and produces much less pollution than the normal diesel or kerosene.
- Some companies offer a conversion that requires the drivers to mix the fuel with a type of exclusive organic solvent additive. The conversion can also work with the fuel being mixed with almost 20% of gasoline or petrol.
- Another conversion provides a two tank system which preheats the oil. One of the tanks holds the vegetable oils and the other one holds a conventional petroleum fuel like diesel or petrol. The driver is then required to start up using the petrol or diesel fuel and then switch on to the vegetable oil after a certain difference. The driver has to switch off the engine only after switching to diesel or petrol for some time.
The cars can be powered by 4 types of vegetable oils:
- SVO – SVO also known as straight vegetable oil refers to untouched new oil which is fresh and has not been used for cooking. It can easily be used in place of a diesel fuel.
- PPO – PPO refers to the pure plant oils. They are just the same as the straight vegetable oils. It is just that PPO is a popular term in the European continent.
- WVO – WVO also known as waste vegetable oil refers to the used cooking oil, the grease, the fryer oil and fish oils that remains from the cooking. This type of oil can also include things like animal fats and the natural oils that get mixed with the oil while cooking.
- UCO – UCO refers to the used cooking oil. It is the same thing as the waste vegetable oil. The oil is however not always made from vegetable oil. It can be fish oil or can be coconut oil.
Some facts have to be kept in mind while opting for cars powered by vegetable oils:
- Some of the diesel engines are more suitable to use the vegetable oils.
- Some of the vegetable oils are much better than the others.
- Some injection pumps are more suitable for conversion.
- Some of the SVO kits are advisable.
- Some of the computerized fuel systems may not work well at all with vegetable oil.
- Some direct injection diesel engines may not agree with the use of straight vegetable oil.
