Biomass is living and recently dead biological material that is used mostly for biofuels production. Biomass can be grown from several plants such as switchgrass, hemp, corn and willow. It can also be grown from trees such as eukaliptus.
If the biomass is not used for biofuels production, it can be used in some other processes – from relatively simple composting and anaerobic digestion to high tech processes such as hydrogenation, acid hydrolisis and pyrolysis. Biomass can also be used for bioheat production.
Biomass is renewable fuel and it is considered as „C neutral“, meaning that it won’t affect the global warming. However, there something to say on this subject… If biomass is used instead of fossil fuels, it releases CO2 into the atmosphere, but if it’s used for biofuels production, it’s „C neutral“ and it doesn’t affect global warming.
Biomass production is a growing industry.
